In fact the whole sanctuary is surrounded by unspoilt nature, offering the opportunity to make even the calm and relaxing excursions.
The Sanctuary as a whole is made up of various buildings, such as the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, the Basilica, the cave where St. Francis received the stigmata and the corridor of the stigmata, frescoed with scenes from the life of the saint.
Above the entrance you can see a representation of the manger, because St. Francis was created a crib for the first. Inside of churches and chapels we can admire many works of the Della Robbia.
From the main square, called Quadrant, for a short flight of steps, we arrive at Spicco Sasso, a huge boulder that seems detached from the mountain, suspended to form a cave where St. Francis loved to pray.
It is a place of peace, serenity, seems to be isolated from the world and is a place steeped in the mysticism and religion in every stone, where no doubt we can "breathe" air of tranquility and peace typical of San Francisco.
Il santuario della Verna si trova nel luogo dove San Francesco ricevette le stigmate nel 1224. Entrando dalla parte meridionale, si arriva al monastero dopo una breve passeggiata nel bosco, lungo un sentiero costeggiato da faggi secolari.
In effetti tutto il Santuario è circondato da una natura incontaminata, che offre la possibilità di effettuare anche delle tranquille e rilassanti escursioni. Il Santuario nel suo complesso è formato da varie costruzioni, come la Chiesetta di Santa Maria degli Angeli, la Basilica, la grotta dove San Francesco ricevette le stimmate e il corridoio delle stimmate, interamente affrescato con scene sulla vita del Santo.
Sopra l’ingresso si può vedere una rappresentazione del presepe, perché fu San Francesco realizzò per primo un presepe. All’interno delle chiese e delle cappelle sono da ammirare numerosi lavori dei Della Robbia. Dal piazzale principale, chiamato Quadrante, per una breve scalinata, si arriva al Sasso Spicco, un enorme masso che sembra staccato dal monte, sospeso in modo da formare una grotta e dove San Francesco amava andare a pregare.
È un luogo di pace, di serenità, sembra quasi di essere isolati dal mondo; è un luogo intriso i misticismo e religione in ogni pietra, in cui indubbiamente si “respira” aria di tranquillità e di quiete tipico di San Francesco.
