The beauty of the area appears to have remained intact over the centuries, the silence and the green spots do not frighten, but they seem to give a sense of peace of the past, the presence of wild boars and other animals do not break this spell.
And this environment so rough and mystical hosted the poetic figure of a hermit, which will be the spark that will give rise to the historical and artistic wonders of the San Galgano.
Galgano Guidotti was a dissolute knight, lived in Tuscany in the XII century. One night San Michele appeared to him in a dream. So he decided not to use the sword to fight and kill and stuck in a rock, where it still is today.
Galgano founded then the beautiful abbey became rich and powerful during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, much to the envy of the Pope.
Time is now reduced to ruins great, but his remains still manage to evoke the intense life that took place between the chapter house, cloister and the scriptorium. Of the church are fragments of walls, was robbed and used as a quarry and lead plates that covered the roof were sold, but its charm remains mysterious.

Il complesso monumentale di San Galgano, situato nella campagna senese, fra Monticiano e Chiusdino, sorge al centro della valle del fiume Merse, affluente dell'Ombrone, una terra altamente popolata, specialmente nel Medioevo, quando potenti feudatari si contendevano il territorio meridionale della Toscana.
La bellezza dei luoghi sembra essere rimasta intatta nei secoli, il silenzio ed il verde delle macchie non impauriscono, ma sembrano dare un senso di pace di altri tempi, la presenza di cinghiali e di altri animali non rompono questo incanto.
E proprio questo ambiente così ruvido e mistico ospitò la figura poetica di un'eremita, che sarà la scintilla che darà origine a quella meraviglia storica ed artistica del complesso di San Galgano.Galgano Guidotti era un cavaliere dissoluto, vissuto in Toscana nel XII secolo. Una notte gli apparve in sogno San Michele: decise allora di non usare più la spada per combattere ed uccidere e la conficcò in una roccia, dove si trova ancora oggi.
Galgano fondò poi la bellissima abbazia che diventò ricca e potente durante il Medioevo ed il Rinascimento, tanto da suscitare l'invidia del Papa.
Oggi è ridotta ad un rudere grandioso, ma i suoi resti riescono ancora ad evocare la vita intensa che si svolgeva fra la sala capitolare, il chiostro e lo scriptorium. Della chiesa rimangono brandelli di mura; fu depradata ed usata come cava e le lastre di piombo che ricoprivano il tetto furono vendute, ma il suo fascino misterioso permane.
Per rendere omaggio a Galgano ed alla sua spada bisogna però arrivare fino al piccolo eremo di Montesiepi, dove il monaco si ritirò nell'ultimo anno di vita e dove fu costruita una cappella in sua memoria.
