Volterra

Volterra is situated on a hill between the valleys of Cecina and Dell'Era and dominates the singular spectacle of the gullies, huge and picturesque ravines caused by erosion.It is a very old town of Etruscan origin, the first archaeological finds of the necropolis dating back to the X, IX century. B.C. From the middle of the VII century. BC. It participates in a lively activity commercial Etruscan, beautifies and it becomes part of the trade federation major Etruscan cities. Later, the Romans occupied it, giving it its present name. But it was in the Middle Ages that begins the real flowering of the city.From a tourist point of view, it is emphasized that the Etruscan walls are still visible, well-preserved, which surround the city center. The heart of the medieval town is Piazza dei Priori, one of the most scenic Italian squares: here activities took place of the old village, whose past glory and boast the impressive ancient buildings, all in gray stone, overlooking the square such as the Palazzo dei Priori, the facade of which are still visible and recognizable emblems of marble and glazed earthenware.Do not miss a visit to the Duomo, a Romanesque of the XII century, with its three naves, where there is also a Deposition in carved and painted wood and a pulpit: on it the students of William Pisano have worked and Art Gallery, where you can admire the Deposition by Rosso Fiorentino and Madonna by Luca Signorelli.It is a city rich in history, art, where you can find traces of the Etruscans, the Romans, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. What most appeals in Volterra, is the medieval atmosphere that reigns in the center, made up of narrow streets, winding streets, small shops where you can see perfectly integrated.In the center there are also many shops selling precious artifacts in alabaster, a typical product of the city, which is extracted just nearby.

Volterra sorge su una verde collina  tra le valli del Cecina e dell' Era e domina il singolare spettacolo dei calanchi, enormi e pittoresche voragini causate dall'erosione.

E' una città antichissima, di origini etrusche; i primi reperti archeologici rinvenuti nelle necropoli risalgono al X, IX sec. a. C. . Dalla metà del VII sec. a .C. partecipa ad una viva attivtà commercile etrusca,si abbellisce ed entra a far parte della confederazione commerile delle maggiori città etrusche. Successivamente i Romani la occuparono, dandole  l'attuale nome. Ma è nel Medioevo che inizia la vera fioritura della città.

Da un punto di vista turistico, si sottolinea che sono tutt'ora visibili le mura etrusche, ben conservate, che circondano il centro storico. Il cuore pulsante della città  medievale è Piazza dei Priori, una delle più scenografiche piazze italiane: qui si svolgevano le attività dell'antico Comune, del cui passato splendore si fregiano gli imponenti ed antichi edifici, tutti in pietra grigia, che si affacciano sulla piazza, come il Palazzo dei Priori, sulla cui facciata sono ancora ben visibili e riconoscibili stemmi di marmo e terracotta smaltata.
Da non perdere sono la visita del Duomo, costruzione romanica del XII secolo, con il suo interno a tre navate, in cui è presente anche una Deposizione in legno scolpito e dipinto ed un pergamo a cui hanno lavorato gli allievi di Guglielmo Pisano e la Pinacoteca, con la Deposizione del Rosso Fiorentino e la Madonna di Luca Signorelli.

E' una città ricca di storia, di arte, dove è possibile trovare tracce di etruschi, romani, del Medievo e del Rinascimento. Quello che attrae maggiormente in Volterra, è la sua atmosfera medievale che si respira per il centro, costituito da viuzze, stradine tortuose, in cui si possono scorgere negozietti perfettamente integrati.
Nel centro sono presenti anche tanti negozic he vendono preziosi manufatti in alabastro, prodotto tipico della città, che viene estratto proprio nelle sue vicinanze.
