Piccolomini library - La libreria Piccolomini

The library is a jewel in the Cathedral of Siena, built in the sixteenth century to preserve the wealth of books of the pope.

At the entrance into this small room the visitor is enchanted by the essence of Renaissance culture: manuscripts on the bulletin boards, flooring cobalt and frescoes by Pinturicchio. They are the life of Pope Piccolomini, Pope Pius II, and after the restoration they have again bought bright colors, making it more alive the characters depicted. Among the most famous scenes stand out the meeting between Frederick III and Eleanor of Aragon, and the canonization of St. Catherine. In this fresco scholars recognize the depiction of Raphael as a young man: he is the young man at the bottom left, with red stockings. All the characters of the frescoes are decorated in great detail and the painter has taken care of these details, such as the soft folds of the garments, jewelery and ornaments of the characters.

La libreria è un gioiello incastonato all'interno del Duomo di Siena, fatta costruire nel Cinquecento per conservare il patrimonio librario del pontefice.
Già dall'ingresso in questo piccolo locale il visitatore rimane incantato dall'essenza della cultura rinascimentale: manoscritti esposti nelle bacheche, pavimentazione color cobalto ed affreschi del Pinturicchio. Questi rappresentano la vita di Papa Piccolomini, Pio II, e  dopo il restauro hanno di nuovo acquistato colori brillanti, accesi, che rendono maggiormente vivi i personaggi raffigurati. Tra le scene più celebri risaltano l'incontro tra Federico III ed Eleonora D'Aragona e la canonizzazione di Santa Caterina. In quest'ultimo affresco gli studiosi riconoscono la raffigurazione di Raffaello da giovane: è il giovane in basso a sinistra, con le calze rosse. Tutti i personaggi degli affreschi sono decorati nei minimi particolari ed il pittore ha curato proprio questi particolari, come le  soffici pieghe delle vesti, i gioielli dei personaggi e gli ornamenti.

Abbey of Monte Oliveto

One of the most beautiful countryside of Siena in the area close to Buonconvento is undoubtedly the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore. It is located in the municipality of Asciano, on a hill covered with cypress trees, in a lovely location, in the middle of the desert Accona, which are the background Crete with steep ravines. The abbey is located about 30 km from Siena. From the main road, the Via Cassia, one must climb for about 8 km to a narrow and made ​​of switchbacks to reach the parking lot in front of the Abbey. There goes within walking along the street in a luxuriant park of tall trees.

The Benedictine Abbey is steeped in absolute peace and from first to last we can breathe the air of peace and tranquility. Contains, within itself, all that you can try when you think of an abbey: a secluded place, where they are art, silence and hospitality.

Upon entering the Abbey you can admire the cloister with all its frescoes, recently restored, painted by Signorelli and Antonio Bazzi, called Sodoma. According to Vasari, his personality was very curious and open-minded, he loved jokes and surrounded by a wide variety of animals and hence the significant nickname. A sign of his originality has in these frescoes, are represented in a painting in the refectory of the monks and if it notices one which, indifferently, steals a loaf brother.

In the cloister there are 35 frescoes depicting the life of St. Benedict, rich in detail, animals and enemies of the Holy devils.

 Continue the visit with the refectory, the church and the library which is built in the Renaissance style with a beautiful carved wooden door.

Uno dei luoghi più suggestivi della campagna senese nella zona vicina a Buonconvento è  senza dubbio l'Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore.  E' situata nel comune di Asciano, su un' altura coperta da cipressi, in una posizione incantevole, nel mezzo del deserto di Accona, a cui fanno sfondo le Crete con i ripidi calanchi . L'abbazia sorge  a circa 30 km da Siena. Dalla strada provinciale, la Cassia, bisogna inerpicarsi per circa 8 km per una strada stretta e fatta di tornanti per raggiungere il parcheggio antistante l'Abbazia. Ci si spinge all'interno percorrendo un lungo viale all'interno di un rigoglioso parco di alberi ad alto fusto.

L'Abbazia benedettina è immersa nella pace più assoluta e dal primo all'ultimo momento si può respirare aria di tranquillità e pace. Racchiude, dentro di sè, tutto ciò che si può cercare quando si pensa  ad un'abbazia: un luogo appartato, in cui si trovano arte, silenzio e accoglienza.

Appena entrati nell'Abbazia si può ammirare il chiostro con tutti i suoi affreschi, recentemente restaurati, dipinti dal Signorelli e da Antonio Bazzi, detto il Sodoma. Secondo Vasari, la sua personalità era molto bizzarra e spregiudicata, amava gli scherzi e circondarsi da dei più svariati animali e da qui il significativo soprannome. Un segno della sua originalità si ha proprio in questi affreschi; in un dipinto vengono rappresentati i frati nel refettorio e se ne nota uno che, con fare indifferente, ruba la pagnotta di un confratello.

Nel chiostro ci sono 35 affreschi che raccontano la vita di San Benedetto, molto ricchi di dettagli, di animali e dei nemici del Santo: i diavoli.

si continua la visita con il refettorio, la chiesa e la biblioteca, che è costruita in stile rinascimentale con una stupenda porta lignea intagliata.
