Anghiari

Today Anghiari is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and already there was a castle or a fortified village in the seventh century when the Lombards occupied the whole of the Tiber Valley. During the centuries it has lived many vicissitudes, among which it should be mentioned that in 1200 finally passed under the dominion of Arezzo and the Bishop of Arezzo, Tarlati,  wanted to build in 1309 the main road link between Sansepolcro and the Loggia delle Fonti.


The village has become famous for the Battle of Anghiari, which took place June 29, 1440. Florentine and papal troops with about 9000 men allied themselves against the troops of the Duke of Milan Visconti of Milan and many more which are also aggregated 2,000 men town of Sansepolcro. The battle lasted about four hours and ended with the victory of the Florentine and papal troops. This avoided that the Milanese got hold of southern Tuscany. According to chroniclers of the time were killed about 900 people, mostly soldiers, as well as 600 horsepower. Even some historians say that 60 of the victims were Milanese women part of Sansepolcro, forced to stay in the back because it involved bringing water to people and animals, overwhelmed by their horses en route.


Its name comes from the Latin word "angularis", at an angle, perhaps for the angular shape of the ancient castle. Other scholars say that it derives from "gravel", as the town center would be built on a huge pile of gravel, piled over the millennia by the Tiber.


However Anghiari, a medieval gem, is perched on a hill and from here there is a stunning view over the surrounding valley. Its narrow streets, its palaces, its Badia, its picturesque squares, the clock tower take you back in time; you breath a medieval atmosphere through the narrow shaded and flowery streets, with soldiers, merchants, knights and ladies. Along the walls, still completely intact, you even have the impression to see the guards that make the rounds.

Not to be missed, of course, the historical commemoration of 29 June, the day when the soldiers come to life Guelphs and Ghibellines and the small village revives its most illustrious personalities.

Oggi Anghiari è considerato uno dei borghi più belli d'Italia e già esisteva un castello o un borgo fortificato nel VII secolo quando i Longobardi occuparono tutto il territorio della Valtiberina. Durante i secoli ha vissuto varie vicissitudini, tra le quali va ricordato che nel 1200 passò definitivamente sotto il dominio di Arezzo ed il vescovo di Arezzo, Tarlati, nel 1309 volle far costruire lo stradone di collegamento tra Sansepolcro e la Loggia delle Fonti.

Il borgo è diventato celebre per la battaglia di Anghiari, che ebbe luogo il 29 giugno 1440. Le truppe fiorentine e quelle papali con circa 9000 uomini si allearono contro le truppe milanesi del Duca Visconti di Milano più numerose ed alle quali si aggregarono anche 2000 uomini della città di Sansepolcro. La battaglia durò circa quattro ore e si concluse con la vittoria dei fiorentini e papalini. Questo evitò che i milanesi si impadronissero della Toscana del sud. Secondo i cronisti del tempo rimasero uccisi circa 900 uomini, soprattutto fanti, oltre a 600 cavalli. Addirittura alcuni storici raccontano che 60 delle vittime di parte milanese furono donne di Sansepolcro, obbligate a rimanere nelle retrovie perché addette a portare acqua a uomini ed animali, travolte proprio dai cavalli in rotta.

Il suo nome deriva dal termine latino "Angularis", ossia ad angolo, forse per la forma angolare dell'antico castello. Altri studiosi dicono che derivi da "ghiaia", in quanto il centro storico sarebbe stato costruito su di un enorme cumulo di ghiaia, ammassato nel corso dei millenni dal Tevere.

Comunque Anghiari, un gioiello medievale, è arroccato su un'altura e da qui si domina un magnifico panorama su tutta la valle circostante. I suoi vicoli, i suoi palazzi, la sua Badia, le sue pittoresche piazze, la torre dell'orologio fanno tornare indietro nel tempo; si respira  tra le strette strade ombreggiate e fiorite un'atmosfera medievale, con soldati, mercanti, dame e cavalieri. Percorrendo le mura, tutt'oggi completamente intatte, si ha addirittura l'impressione di scorgere le guardie che fanno la ronda.
Da non perdere, sicuramente, la rievocazione storica del 29 giugno, giorno in cui riprendono vita i soldati guelfi e ghibellini e il piccolo borgo si rianima dei suoi personaggi più illustri.
