Il Diotto

 

On 8th September in Scarperia, in Mugello, near Florence.


With the name of Diotto is known to this tradition, which is inspired by Florence arrival of the new Vicar of the "eighth day" when the outgoing vicar was meeting him, he organized games and a party in his honor. On this occasion the new Vicar was sworn in the oratory of the Madonna di Piazza, the oath still lives in the same square, which takes place every year on September 8, the feast of the Nativity of Our Lady.

Already from the previous week, with two days Renaissance (September 1-2) Scarperia dresses up, goes back in time, and the inhabitants, as if by magic, repopulate the castle dressed in Renaissance costumes. On the streets you can meet the grinder, the blacksmith, the farmer, walking with typical products of the area, the soldiers, knights and ladies, acrobats, musicians, fire-eaters, master cutlers (the typical product of the city 'own the knife) .... The town center is enriched with many colors, scents and fragrances.

The real party on September 8, at 9.00 p.m, begins when the procession of the new vicar enters the village, accompanied by the music of trumpets and drums. Waiting for him there is the procession of the outgoing vicar, the two greet each other and walk together through the streets of Scarperia until the square, where the new vicar swears loyalty to the city.

Five games make the Palio of Diotto and these competitions involved four teams. The games which can be observed are the launch of knives, running on the bricks, running in tubs (typical container slats used in viticulture), the tug of war, the race of plenty.

Once the games, we assign a score to each team and the one that has scored the most points will receive the Palio, between enthusiasm and the cheers of the audience cheering.

L'8 settembre a Scarperia, nel Mugello, in provincia di Firenze.

Con il nome di Diotto è conosciuta questa tradizione, che si ispira all'arrivo da Firenze del nuovo Vicario il l'otto di', quando quello uscente gli si faceva incontro festeggiandolo e facendolo assistere ai giochi organizzati in suo onore. In questa occasione il nuovo Vicario prestava giuramento nell'oratorio della Madonna di Piazza; tale giuramento rivive ancora oggi, nella stessa piazza, che si ripete ogni anno l'8 settembre, festa della Natività della Madonna.
Già dalla settimana precedente, con due giornate rinascimentali ( 1-2 settembre) Scarperia si veste a festa, torna indietro nel tempo; gli abitanti, come per magia, ripopolano il castello abbigliati con abiti rinascimentali. Per le strade si possono incontrare l'arrotino, il fabbro, il contadino, ambulanti con prodotti tipici della zona, i soldati, dame e cavalieri, i saltimbanchi, i musici, i mangiafuoco, mastri coltellinai ( il prodotto tipico della città e' proprio il coltello).... Il centro della cittadina si arricchisce di mille colori, odori e profumi.

La festa vera e propria, l'8 settembre ore 21.00, inizia quando il corteo del nuovo vicario entra nel borgo, accompagnato dalla musica di trombe e tamburi. Ad attenderlo c'e' il corteo del vicario uscente, i due si salutano dignosamente ed, insieme, attraversano le vie di Scarperia fino ad arrivare nella piazza, dove il nuovo vicario giura fedeltà alla città.
Sono cinque i giochi che compongono il Palio del Diotto ed a queste competizioni partecipano quattro squadre. I giochi a cui si assiste sono il lancio dei coltelli, la corsa sui mattoni, la corsa nelle bigonce (tipici recipienti a doghe utilizzati nella viticoltura), il tiro alla fune, la corsa della cuccagna.

Terminati i giochi, si assegna il punteggio alle singole squadre e quella che avrà totalizzato il maggior punteggio riceverà il Palio, fra l' entusiasmo e le acclamazioni festanti del pubblico.

La giostra del Saracino

The first Sunday of September in Arezzo, Piazza Grande, you can attend the commemoration of the "Joust of the Saracen".

It is a jousting tournament in picturesque costumes of the fourteenth century, one of the oldest tournaments military that has been handed down to the present day, is derived from the duel in "single combat", consists of three main components: the weapon, the target and the race .

Probably it is derived from the training of the troops on horseback, who were carried to hit a puppet with a spear, with the appearance of an enemy. This puppet perhaps it was called "Saracen" or "dark" to sharpen the hatred of the knights against Arabs or Saracens pirates.

With regard to the current organization of the revival, the competition on the four city districts: Porta Crucifera, Porta al Foro, Porta Sant' Andrea, Porta Santo Spirito.

The event is preceded by a parade in costume, magnificent, majestic, colorful, with weapons, horse trappings, details and sumptuous crests of the helmets, which does outline a cheering crowd and noisy. The Banner of the city opens with the solemn procession in the Piazza Grande and form an impressive line-up.

The target, the Saracen, the rider must hit with the spear is located on the opposite corner of departure. The rider tries to hit a specific area of the phantom to get the highest score.

At the end of the eight frantic gallop, the district winner gets the "Golden Lance" between the blaze and the enthusiasm of the audience.



La prima domenica di settembre: ad Arezzo, in Piazza Grande, si può assistere alla rievocazione della " Giostra del Saracino".

E' un pittoresco torneo cavalleresco in costumi del Trecento, tra i più antichi tornei militari che sia stato tramandato fino ai nostri giorni; deriva dal duello a"singolar tenzone", costituito da tre elementi fondamentali:l'arma, il bersaglio e la corsa.
Probabilmente deriva dall'addestramento delle truppe a cavallo, che venivano esercitate a colpire con la lancia un fantoccio, con le sembianze di un nemico. Questo fantoccio forse veniva chiamato "saracino" o " moro" per acuire l'odio dei cavalieri nei confronti dei pirati arabi o saraceni.

Per quanto riguarda l'attuale organizzazione della rievocazione, la competizione riguarda i quattro quartieri cittadini: Porta Crucifera, Porta al Foro, Porta Sant'Andrea, Porta Santo Spirito.
La manifestazione e' preceduta da un corteo storico in costume, fastoso, maestoso, variopinto, con armi, bardature di cavalli, particolari e sontuosi cimieri degli elmi, a cui fa contorno una folla festante e rumorosa. Il Gonfalone della città apre con solennità il corteo e forma in Piazza Grande un suggestivo schieramento.
Il bersaglio, il Saracino, che il cavaliere deve colpire con la lancia si trova al vertice opposto della partenza. Il cavaliere cerca di colpire una zona precisa del fantoccio per ottenere il punteggio massimo.

Al termine delle otto frenetiche galoppate, il Quartiere vincitore ottiene la "Lancia d'oro",tra il tripudio e l'entusiasmo del pubblico.
