Monteriggioni, located in the Val d'Elsa, near Siena, is visible from afar, on a hilltop surrounded by olive trees, like a place out of time: only 42 people live there in the shelter of the turreted walls built by the Sienese in the XIII century, to defend against attacks Florentine and control the main roads. Monteriggioni was really impregnable: fell only when a traitor, Captain Zeti, surrendered without a fight to the Florentines.The tour can begin right from the around the walls, a little more than 500 meters. The plain between Colle Val d 'Elsa and Monteriggioni was once a swamp, where today there are only two lakes, dark Lake and clear lake, around which is known ancient legend.One day passes here the bishop San Cerbone, who stopped at an inn for the night. The landlord was a very evil man and the bishop tried to make him repent of his sins, but without success. The next day, leaving the bishop prophesied that soon the inn, and the landlord would have wallowed and so it was: this is the origin of the lake clear.Lake dark instead appeared as a sodomite, who would not repent of his sins, sank into the depths of hell, and instead of his house formed the dark lake. Monteriggioni, situato nella Val D'Elsa, in provincia di Siena, appare visibile da lontano, su un cocuzzolo contornato da ulivi, come un luogo fuori dal tempo: ci vivono solo 42 abitanti al riparo della cerchia muraria turrita costruita nel XIII dai senesi, per difendersi dagli attacchi fiorentini e controllare le vie principali. Monteriggioni eradavvero inespugnabile: caddesolo quando untraditore, il capitano Zeti, si arrese ai fiorentini senza combattere.

La visita può iniziare proprio dal giro delle mura, poco più di 500 metri: qui anticamente si trovavano le "carbonaie", cioè un fossato riempito di carbone e che veniva incendiato in caso di assalti.

All'interno troverete viuzze, negozi, artigiani, la piccola parrocchia che offrono un insieme che si è conservato per secoli.

Di recente, oltre apoter accedere al camminamento sulle mura, è stato allestito un piccolo museo delle armi e armature, dove sono esposte riproduzioni di armature di diverse epoche storiche.

Monteriggioni, inoltre, si trova sull'antica via Francigena, seguita dai pellegrini che si recavano a Roma ed è un ottimo punto di partenza per camminare e riscoprire paesaggi mozzafiato di questa zona. I più fortunati potrebbero trovarei cunicoli ed i passaggi leggendari che dovrebbero collegare Siena e Monteriggioni partendo dal pozzo di piazza Roma.

La piana tra Colle Val d' Elsa e Monteriggioni era un tempo una palude, di cui oggi rimango nosolo due laghi, chiamati Lago scuro e Lago chiaro, intorno ai quali è conosciuta un'antica leggenda.

Un giorno passa di qui il vescovo San Cerbone, che si fermò in una locanda per la notte.. L'oste era un uomo veramente malvagio ed il vescovo cercò di farlo pentire dei suoi peccati, ma senza successo. Il giorno dopo, partendo, il vescovoo profetizzò che presto la locanda e l'oste sarebbero sprofondati e così fu:questa è l'origine del Lago chiaro.

Il Lago scuro, invece apparve quando un sodomita, che non voleva pentirsi dei suoi peccati, sprofondò negli abissi dell'Inferno e al posto della sua casa si formò il Lago scuro. Si dice che in questo lago non galleggi neanche il legno: anche l'acqua si comporta contro natura, come il sodomita.

San Gimignano

San Gimignano rises on a hill overlooking the Val d'Elsa, in the province of Siena.
A legend is linked to the history of the town's name. It is said that a bishop of Modena, Bishop Gimignano, during one of his travels, is dead in the land. San Gimignano sorge su una collina che domina la Val D'Elsa, nella provincia di Siena.

Una leggenda è legata alla storia del nome della cittadina. Si racconta che un vescovo di Modena,  il vescovo Gimignano, durante uno dei suoi viaggi, è defunto in quella terra. In occasione della sua cerimonia funebre, un ragazzo rimase colpito dal grosso anello che brillava al dito del defunto; finse di baciare la salma e tentò di sfilare l'anello, con il risultato che, oltre all'anello, si trovò in manoanche il dito del vescovo. Terrorizzato fuggì ed arrivò all'interno di una cappellina, dove chiese aiuto e confessò il furto, riconsegnando la refurtiva ad un sacerdote. da quel giorno la chiesetta prese il nome del vescovo ed intorno ad essa si sviluppò la straordinaria e meravigliosa cittadina.

San Gimignano è circondata da mura del 1200 e conserva 15 delle 72 torri originarie, tanto da avere l'appellativo di "Manhattan" del Medio Evo.
Il centro è caratterizzato da due piazze comunicanti, Piazza della Cisterna e Piazza del Duomo, centro monumentale della città. La sua facciata è semplice, ma la scalinata per accedervi e tutta la piazza circostante donano un'atmosfera speciale. All'interno si rimane estasiati dalla bellezza e particolarità degli affreschi, che raccontano  molti episodi  biblici.
San Gimignano è tuttora una città in cui si respira un'atmosfera medievale e riecheggiano vivaci brusii di altri tempi, con i suoi profumi e sapori di prodotti tipici, come la Vernaccia o lo zafferano.
Camminando tra  le piccole strade tortuose e vicoli stretti, ci si aspetta proprio di versi comparire davanti da un momento all'altro un cavaliere, un soldato o una dama con le sue damigelle.

Chi ama il Medioevo non si può perdere la visita al museo San Gimignano 1300 and Tresure Hunt, in cui è possibile ammirare una ricostruzione in miniatura della città nel 1300: impressionante per laqualità e quantità dei dettagli; sembra proprio di essere tra le vie del tempo. Ideale anche per i bambini più piccoli.
