Every year on January 6th a solemn procession in costume, consisting of about 700 listed and inspired by the famous fresco by Benozzo Gozzoli in the Chapel of the Magi in Palazzo Medici Riccardi, moves through the streets of Florence to celebrate the feast of the Epiphany, in memory the visit of the Three Kings to the Christ Child.The Three Kings are on horseback, wearing sumptuous clothing of the Renaissance, are accompanied by the Procession of the Florentine Republic and parade along a route that starts from Piazza Pitti and runs along the ancient streets to the Piazza del Duomo. Inside the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, they go to offer gifts to the image of the Child Jesus, and the Opera del Duomo distributes small gifts to all the children in attendance.
The Three Kings are preceded by horsemen, footmen, flags: all around there is a charming and enchanting atmosphere.
The Cavalcade of the Three Kings starts at 2:00p.m from Pitti Palace, across the Piazza della Signoria at 3.00p.m, from here, along with the Sbandieratori, or flag-throwing company, reaches the Cathedral at 3:30p.m and stops between the Cathedral and the Baptistery, in the area known in antiquity "Paradise."
Ogni anno il 6 gennaio un solenne corteo in costume, formato da circa 700 figuranti ed ispirato al celebre affresco di Benozzo Gozzoli nella Cappella dei Magi in Palazzo Medici Riccardi, percorre le strade del centro di Firenze per celebrare la festa dell'Epifania, in ricordo della visita dei tre Re Magi a Gesù Bambino.
I Re Magi sono a cavallo, indossano abiti sontuosi del Rinascimento, sono accompagnati dal Corteo della Repubblica Fiorentina e sfilano seguendo un percorso che parte da Piazza Pitti e si snoda lungo le antiche vie cittadine fino alla Piazza del Duomo. All’interno della Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, vanno a offrire doni all’immagine di Gesù Bambino, mentre l'Opera del Duomo distribuisce piccoli doni a tutti i bambini intervenuti.
I Magi sono preceduti da cavalieri, valletti, sbandieratori, gonfaloni: tutto intorno si crea un'atmosfera suggestiva e incantevole.
La Cavalcata dei Magi parte alle 14,30 da Palazzo Pitti, attraversa piazza della Signoria alle 15,00, da qui, insieme al corteo degli sbandieratori, raggiunge il Duomo alle ore 15,30 e si ferma tra la Cattedrale e il Battistero, in quello spazio detto nell'antichità "il Paradiso".
