Piccolomini library - La libreria Piccolomini

The library is a jewel in the Cathedral of Siena, built in the sixteenth century to preserve the wealth of books of the pope.

At the entrance into this small room the visitor is enchanted by the essence of Renaissance culture: manuscripts on the bulletin boards, flooring cobalt and frescoes by Pinturicchio. They are the life of Pope Piccolomini, Pope Pius II, and after the restoration they have again bought bright colors, making it more alive the characters depicted. Among the most famous scenes stand out the meeting between Frederick III and Eleanor of Aragon, and the canonization of St. Catherine. In this fresco scholars recognize the depiction of Raphael as a young man: he is the young man at the bottom left, with red stockings. All the characters of the frescoes are decorated in great detail and the painter has taken care of these details, such as the soft folds of the garments, jewelery and ornaments of the characters.

Castle of Brolio - Castello di Brolio

The Castle of Brolio, nestled in a charming hill of the Chianti area, still retains a medieval atmosphere with its old mold and the vast park. The town's name, which derives from the Lombard word "Brolo" means a green space closed. The castle stands between Gaiole and Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the middle of endless vineyards, from which since 1141 the Ricasoli prepare their famous wine cellars in place to grow old within the mighty walls. You can have the most charming view from the south side, where a large terraced garden is raised on a staircase which leads to a beautiful balcony, from where you can enjoy a wonderful panorama of the Chianti.

Its most famous owner was Bettino Ricasoli, a leader of the Risorgimento and known by the nickname "Iron Baron". The family was one of the most important in Chianti, Bettino was a businessman and a great innovator in the field of agricultural techniques (for example, his original formula of the Chianti wine) and held important political offices, twice that of first Minister, after he had so much contributed to the unification of Italy.

A local legend has it that during the nights of the full moon in the surroundings of the castle roams the ghost of Bettino Ricasoli. Some have seen him walking alone or on horseback followed by a pack of hunting dogs. Indeed it seems that the Baron's bed was unmade found several times after his death, just as if someone had slept there.

Although it is private and still inhabited, the castle is open to the garden, the chapel, the ticket costs 5 Euro. (8 Euro with the visit to the museum). The price includes a wine tasting in the cellars of the castle, which are located in the village of Madonna in Brolio: do not miss !!

Open to the public: Tuesday to Sunday 10:30a.m to 12:30p.m and 2:00p.m to 5:30p.m

Poggio a Caiano

The Villa Medici at Poggio a Caiano was built by Lorenzo de 'Medici and his heirs between 1485 and 1520, with a likely break between 1495 and 1515 due to the exile of the Medici.

It was always the summer residence of the Medici and, in addition to hosting numerous personalities. was the scene of important events in their history, such as the celebration of the marriage of Alessandro de 'Medici and Margaret of Austria (1556), Cosimo I and Eleonora of Toledo (1559), Francis I and his mistress Bianca Cappello already (in 1579 ).

The Villa was a necessary step for all new brides Grand Ducal, who before his visit here in the city receiving the homage of the Florentine nobility and the case of Joan of Austria, first wife of Francis I and Christine of Lorraine, wife Ferdinand I.

Anghiari

Today Anghiari is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and already there was a castle or a fortified village in the seventh century when the Lombards occupied the whole of the Tiber Valley. During the centuries it has lived many vicissitudes, among which it should be mentioned that in 1200 finally passed under the dominion of Arezzo and the Bishop of Arezzo, Tarlati,  wanted to build in 1309 the main road link between Sansepolcro and the Loggia delle Fonti.

The village has become famous for the Battle of Anghiari, which took place June 29, 1440. Florentine and papal troops with about 9000 men allied themselves against the troops of the Duke of Milan Visconti of Milan and many more which are also aggregated 2,000 men town of Sansepolcro. The battle lasted about four hours and ended with the victory of the Florentine and papal troops. This avoided that the Milanese got hold of southern Tuscany. According to chroniclers of the time were killed about 900 people, mostly soldiers, as well as 600 horsepower. Even some historians say that 60 of the victims were Milanese women part of Sansepolcro, forced to stay in the back because it involved bringing water to people and animals, overwhelmed by their horses en route.

Its name comes from the Latin word "angularis", at an angle, perhaps for the angular shape of the ancient castle. Other scholars say that it derives from "gravel", as the town center would be built on a huge pile of gravel, piled over the millennia by the Tiber.

However Anghiari, a medieval gem, is perched on a hill and from here there is a stunning view over the surrounding valley. Its narrow streets, its palaces, its Badia, its picturesque squares, the clock tower take you back in time; you breath a medieval atmosphere through the narrow shaded and flowery streets, with soldiers, merchants, knights and ladies. Along the walls, still completely intact, you even have the impression to see the guards that make the rounds.

Not to be missed, of course, the historical commemoration of 29 June, the day when the soldiers come to life Guelphs and Ghibellines and the small village revives its most illustrious personalities.
