Santa Maria Novella

Santa Maria Novella is one of the most important churches in Gothic style in Tuscany.

The Friars Dominicans started to build the church in the twelfth century, in an area of ​​fields outside the walls of the medieval city.

The facade is entirely made of white marble and green, the lower part was performed by the architect Dominican Jacopo Talenti, while the upper part was completed later in 1470 by Giovan Battista Alberti.

As you enter your eyes are lost in admiring the many wonders of art that can be found inside, as the wooden crucifix by Giotto, which dominates the central aisle separating the church from the top and bottom and whose beauty lies in the linearity and realism of Christ. Just turn a little your eyes and immediately you can see the Trinity, fresco by Masaccio, which is one of the first and most perfect examples of Renaissance perspective, and yet the Tornabuoni Chapel, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, with frescoes by Ghirlandaio.

You can also stand in front of the wooden Crucifix by Brunelleschi, also known as the "Cross of the eggs."
An anecdote, in fact, says that Donatello showed to Brunelleschi his crucifix, which is located in Santa Croce, but Brunelleschi did not like it because of the excessive realism. At the end, Brunelleschi told Donatello that he had crucified a farmer. At this point Donatello challenged Brunelleschi, that started immediately to carve his crucifix.
As recounted by Vasari, when Brunelleschi had finished his work, he invited Donatello to lunch, but before they passed along from the market, where they bought some eggs, among other things. Brunelleschi made ​​to hold the eggs in Donatello apron and told him to precede him at home and wait for him there. Entered the house of Brunelleschi, Donatello saw the beautiful Christ and astonishment was so great that she opened his hands, let go of the apron and the eggs fell to the ground.

Santa Maria Novella è una delle chiese più importanti in stile gotico della Toscana.
I Frati dominicani iniziarono a costruire la chiesa nel XII secolo, in una zona di campi esterna alle mura della città medievale.
La facciata è interamente costruita con marmo bianco e verde; la parte inferiore è stata eseguita dall'architetto domenicano, Iacopo Talenti, mentre la parte superiore fu completata piu tardi, nel 1470, da Giovan Battista Alberti.

Non appena entrate  gli occhi si perdono nell'ammirare le numerose meraviglie pittoriche che si trovano all'interno, come il Crocifisso ligneo di Giotto, che domina la navata centrale separando la chiesa inferiore da quella superiore e la cui bellezza risiede nella linearità e nel realismo di Cristo. Basta volgere un po' gli occhi e subito si può ammirare la Trinità, affresco di Masaccio, che è uno dei primi e più perfetti esemplari della prospettiva rinascimentale, ed ancora La Cappella Tornabuoni, dedicata alla Madonna Assunta, affrescata dal Ghirlandaio.

Inoltre si può sostare davanti al Crocifisso ligneo di Brunelleschi, noto anche come " il Crocifisso delle uova".
Un aneddoto, infatti, racconta che Donatello mostrò a Brunelleschi il suo crocifisso, che si trova in Santa Croce, ma a Brunelleschi non piacque a causa dell'eccessivo realismo. Alla fine Brunelleschi disse che Donatello aveva messo in croce un contadino. A questo punto Donatello sfidò Brunelleschi, che inizò subito a scolpire il suo crocifisso. 
Come racconta il Vasari, quando ebbe finito l'opera Brunelleschi invitò a pranzo Donatello, ma prima passarono insieme dal mercato, dove comprarono, tra le altre cose, anche delle uova. Brunelleschi fece tenere le uova nel grembiule a Donatello e gli disse di precederlo a casa ed attenderlo lì. Entrato nella casa di Brunelleschi, Donatello vide il bellissimo Cristo e lo stupore fu tanto che aprì le mani, lasciò andare il grembiule e le uova caddero per terra.
