A legend is linked to the history of the town's name. It is said that a bishop of Modena, Bishop Gimignano, during one of his travels, is dead in the land. During his funeral, a boy was struck by the large ring that shone on his finger of the deceased; pretended to kiss the corpse and tried to remove the ring, with the result that, in addition to the ring, he found himself in the finger of manoanche bishop. Terrorizzato fuggì ed arrivò all'interno di una cappellina, dove chiese aiuto e confessò il furto, riconsegnando la refurtiva ad un sacerdote. da quel giorno la chiesetta prese il nome del vescovo ed intorno ad essa si sviluppò la straordinaria e meravigliosa cittadina.
San Gimignano è circondata da mura del 1200 e conserva 15 delle 72 torri originarie, tanto da avere l'appellativo di "Manhattan" del Medio Evo.
