La giostra del Saracino
The first Sunday of September in Arezzo, Piazza Grande, you can attend the commemoration of the "Joust of the Saracen".
It is a jousting tournament in picturesque costumes of the fourteenth century, one of the oldest tournaments military that has been handed down to the present day, is derived from the duel in "single combat", consists of three main components: the weapon, the target and the race .
Probably it is derived from the training of the troops on horseback, who were carried to hit a puppet with a spear, with the appearance of an enemy. This puppet perhaps it was called "Saracen" or "dark" to sharpen the hatred of the knights against Arabs or Saracens pirates.
With regard to the current organization of the revival, the competition on the four city districts: Porta Crucifera, Porta al Foro, Porta Sant' Andrea, Porta Santo Spirito.
The event is preceded by a parade in costume, magnificent, majestic, colorful, with weapons, horse trappings, details and sumptuous crests of the helmets, which does outline a cheering crowd and noisy. The Banner of the city opens with the solemn procession in the Piazza Grande and form an impressive line-up.
The target, the Saracen, the rider must hit with the spear is located on the opposite corner of departure. The rider tries to hit a specific area of the phantom to get the highest score.
At the end of the eight frantic gallop, the district winner gets the "Golden Lance" between the blaze and the enthusiasm of the audience.

Abbey of Monte Oliveto
One of the most beautiful countryside of Siena in the area close to Buonconvento is undoubtedly the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore. It is located in the municipality of Asciano, on a hill covered with cypress trees, in a lovely location, in the middle of the desert Accona, which are the background Crete with steep ravines. The abbey is located about 30 km from Siena. From the main road, the Via Cassia, one must climb for about 8 km to a narrow and made of switchbacks to reach the parking lot in front of the Abbey. There goes within walking along the street in a luxuriant park of tall trees.
The Benedictine Abbey is steeped in absolute peace and from first to last we can breathe the air of peace and tranquility. Contains, within itself, all that you can try when you think of an abbey: a secluded place, where they are art, silence and hospitality.
Upon entering the Abbey you can admire the cloister with all its frescoes, recently restored, painted by Signorelli and Antonio Bazzi, called Sodoma. According to Vasari, his personality was very curious and open-minded, he loved jokes and surrounded by a wide variety of animals and hence the significant nickname. A sign of his originality has in these frescoes, are represented in a painting in the refectory of the monks and if it notices one which, indifferently, steals a loaf brother.

on the first Saturday of September: The Palio is held in the Cerro Cerreto Guidi, near Florence. The festivities continue the next day.
Since the fourteenth century the inhabitants of Cerreto have always had great devotion to Santa Liberata, so in 1588 he became the patron of the first of September. During this occasion, besides the religious procession was set up the "prize": a series of simple castle games, marked on the force, on skill, on the competition, reflexes and intelligence.
Every day, to better organize the games, the town was divided into four "quarters", which was given the name of the ancient castle of the four doors: Porta Fiorentina, to the palace gate, Porta Santa Maria to Pozzuolo, Port Caracosta .
The games, which have been handed down and that will continue to do are: Rides on troppoli (pieces of wood joists 30 cm long) and tubs (typical container slats, used in viticulture), the tug of war, the launch of the rings and the crossbow manesca. They are rustic and popular games of origin, demonstrating the simple character of the inhabitants of Cerreto.
Of the five games, the race of the crossbow is one that requires most preparation and careful, because this ancient instrument is dependent on its perfection by the accuracy with which the weapon is set up.
At the end of games, the winning district celebrates with cheerful and boisterous toasts.

From 6 April to 27 October will see the floor of the cathedral.
In the fourteenth century Siena became a major center of production and dissemination of the Gothic style in Italy, whose testimony is the most representative Duomo, by the facade tricuspidata in white marble, which is bright, cheerful and full of details. Its interior has a Latin cross and divided by pillars in black and white stripes, you can admire the works of the greatest Sienese artists.
The most special element is the floor of the cathedral, a unique example of its kind. It remains covered for most of the year by wooden planks to protect it from foot traffic and visitors.
The decoration affects 1,300 square meters and lasted from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century: if initially the work was based on simplicity, with the passage of time was refined to create scenes that seem real paintings, there are scenes from mythology greek-Roman, of the Old and New Testaments. The 56 scenes were made by the many artists that have followed, among them the Pinturicchio, Domenico di Bartolo, Francesco di Giorgio Martini, Domenico Beccafumi.
San Gimignano
San Gimignano rises on a hill overlooking the Val d'Elsa, in the province of Siena.
A legend is linked to the history of the town's name. It is said that a bishop of Modena, Bishop Gimignano, during one of his travels, is dead in the land. During his funeral, a boy was struck by the large ring that shone on his finger of the deceased; pretended to kiss the corpse and tried to remove the ring, with the result that, in addition to the ring, he found himself in the finger of manoanche bishop. Terrified, he fled and arrived in a small chapel, where he asked for help and confessed the theft, giving back the stolen goods to a priest. From that day the church was named after the bishop and around it the extraordinary and wonderful town developed.
San Gimignano is surrounded by walls of 1200 and retains 15 of the 72 original towers, so as to have the name "Manhattan" of the Middle Ages. The center is characterized by two squares communicating, Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza del Duomo, the monumental center of the city. Its facade is simple, but the steps to access it and all the surrounding square lend a special atmosphere. Inside are ecstatic by the beauty and uniqueness of the frescos that tell many stories of the Bible. San Gimignano is still a city where the atmosphere is lively buzz medieval and echo of the past, with its scents and flavors of local products, such as Vernaccia or saffron.Walking through the small winding roads and narrow streets, is expected to appear before their verses from one moment to the next, a knight, a soldier or a lady with her bridesmaids.
Those who love the Middle Ages, you can not miss a visit to the museum San Gimignano 1300 and Tresure Hunt, where you can admire a miniature reconstruction of the city in 1300: impressive for the quality and amount of detail, it seems to be one of the ways of time. Ideal for younger children, too.
